School Safety Resources

We at the Lakewood City Schools continually strive to ensure that our students and staff members are teaching and learning in as safe an environment as possible. Thanks to the community's generosity, we have newer buildings that include many upgraded safety features our old buildings did not such as electronically controlled door locks and cameras that are livestreamed directly to the Lakewood Police Department. We employ six security guards at the high school and have two full-time Lakewood Police Student Resource Officers. We hope this page gives you some reassurance that the District will always take seriously the safety of your student and our employees.

Safer Ohio School Tip Line: 844-723-3764

Lakewood City Schools uses the Safer Ohio School Tip Line, a free resource available to Ohio schools. The tip line is an anonymous reporting system that accepts both calls and texts 24 hours-a-day. This tip line allows students and adults to anonymously share information with school officials and law enforcement about threats to student safety — whether that involves a threatened mass incident or harm to a single student.

Emergency Communication

  • In the event of an emergency, any updates will come via our Blackboard messaging system via email, text and robocall directly to District families and/or our social media pages (Twitter, Facebook pages) for the greater community.
  • Please note, during an active scene and investigation, all communication is made in conjunction with the Lakewood Police Department. Information is communicated as it is available.
  • We will communicate with families districtwide, no matter what building the emergency is impacting. Many of our families have children at multiple buildings, some of our buildings are closer to one another and may be impacted due to proximity. We think it is important for all families to know what is happening within the District.

What to Do

  • If you receive a robocall, listen to the entire message. Avoid calling the school if at all possible. Keeping phone lines open for emergency use is extremely important.
  • In the event of an emergency, please do not come to your child’s school building unless instructed to do so. If you are required to pick up your child, you will receive instructions of where and when to do so. Keeping the area around the school clear for emergency personnel is critical .
  • Please do not try to call your child’s cell phone during a lockdown situation. Phones ringing or buzzing while in lockdown can be dangerous.
  • Watch your phone and email for direct notifications from the District. Rely on official communications from the District or public safety officials for information.
  • Ensure your child's emergency contact information is accurate and current with the District.

When Will We Communicate?

  • Families will be notified during an emergency situation. This includes lockdowns, natural disasters, evacuations, etc.
  • Families may not be notified during a non-emergency situation or incidents that do not have a building-wide impact. This may include situations where no immediate threat is perceived to the general student and staff population. For example, this could include some medical emergencies or classroom disruptions. Family notifications in these situations are determined on a case-by-case basis for those students affected.

Contact Info Updated?

At the beginning of the school year, ensure your contact information is updated through the  Registration Gateway portal. This ensures the District has the most up-to-date information to contact you in the case of an emergency. Throughout the year, report any change in your address, phone number or email address to your building secretary.
