Ast Named Next Assistant Superintendent

The Board of Education at its April 13 meeting approved Lakewood City Schools Director of Teaching and Learning Steven Ast as the District’s next assistant superintendent. Ast will replace Dr. Christine Palumbo, who is retiring.

Ast is currently in his fifth year as Lakewood City Schools’ director of its Teaching and Learning Department. A veteran educator and administrator, Ast’s career includes a decade as a high school principal at both Brecksville-Broadview Heights and Chagrin Falls, as well as being a social studies teacher at Mayfield High School.

Beyond the district level, Steven has influenced educational policy and practice through his service on the National Association of Secondary School Principals Board of Directors and the College Board National Assembly.

Ast is eager to dive into his new role. “I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work in Lakewood and very excited for my new role,” Ast said.  Over the past five years, I have been so impressed and inspired by the dedication our district team shows to our students and their families.  As we continue to navigate a period of unprecedented change in education, the Vision of the Lakewood Ranger competencies have never been more important to our students and their future.  I look forward to continuing our work on bringing that vision to a reality for our students in this new capacity.”

Ast served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve from 1996-2002. He earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Ashland University and an M.S. in Education from University of Akron, where he is currently an adjunct professor. He holds a superintendent’s license earned at Cleveland State University.  Ast begins his new position Aug. 1, 2026.
