Third Quarter T1dbits from Title 1
During our busy third quarter, many Title 1 students at Roosevelt are beginning to prepare for important reading tests. Third graders have finished the Fall administration of the state reading test and have received scores. Second graders are busy wrapping up Terra Nova Achievement Tests. These standardized achievement tests provide important information on student progress in different subjects.
Third graders will take the spring administration of the state Reading Achievement Assessment in late March. Ohio’s Third Grade Guarantee Law provides that except for those with special circumstances, students must meet a minimum score on the state reading test to move on to the Fourth grade. This score must be attained either in the Fall, or Spring administration of the test.
Fourth and Fifth graders will also be taking online AIR exams in March. These exams reflect a shift to Common Core State Standards and include more Nonfiction reading with detailed written evidence to support responses. You can assist by helping your children compose their writing in a concise form: topic, details, summary, and pay attention to capitalization and punctuation. Writing in a daily notebook is a great way to promote growth in writing skills.
Our Title 1 students are continually being progress monitored to ensure that they are making gains in their reading skills and development. Your young reader should be continuing to refine and practice reading skills on a nightly basis. Reading to and with your child has been proven to be one of the best ways to grow your child’s reading skills. No one is ever too old to be read to!
Our Title 1 website contains many links to reading resources. Ohio’s online portal for state practice tests is linked as are leveled practice reading passages for all students. There are numerous read-aloud story links which have a proven research base in improving fluency and comprehension. For younger students, there is a leveled list of sight words to master as well as, foundational skills for early and emergent readers at Progressive Phonics and Starfall. Students will enjoy reading along with Clifford stories, Unite for Literacy, Storyline, and Just Books read aloud. Nonfiction texts will certainly interest your child and are available through links for Unite for Literacy and National Geographic Young Explorer. Book Flix offers paired texts with videos. All children will enjoy our link to Reading Games Galore!
A link to the Lakewood Public Library is also accessible through our website. Here you will find links to children’s activities and Tumblebooks, an online reading library your children are sure to love!
You can access the Roosevelt Title 1 Website under Quick Links on the Roosevelt home page. It is our hope that you and your children will enjoy the bond that reading together brings, will visit our Title 1 site often, and will make reading a daily priority in your home.
