Elementary & Middle School Guide for Parents
What is Gifted?
The State of Ohio defines students identified as “gifted” as those “who perform or show potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment.”
Superior Cognitive Identification
A child shall be identified as exhibiting “superior cognitive ability” by scoring at least two standard deviations above the mean, minus the standard error of measurement, on an intelligence test that is listed on the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce’s list of approved assessments given in the last 24 months.
Specific Academic Identification
A child shall be identified as exhibiting “specific academic ability” if the child performs at or above the 95th percentile on a nationally normed achievement test given within the last 24 months.

- All 2nd grade students are given cognitive and achievement tests in the spring to determine their qualifications for gifted services.
- All 5th graders are given cognitive and achievement tests in the spring to determine their qualifications for gifted services in middle school.
- Students in grades 2-8 take the Math i-Ready benchmark three times a year to determine academic readiness and gifted identification.
