Our academic superstars were in the spotlight at the 36th annual Celebration of Excellence academic awards ceremony held May 21 at the Civic Auditorium, as the District honored 307 students in grades 6-12 for having achieved a 4.0 or more GPA through three quarters this school year. The senior class had a record number of 70 students earning recognition. They received their awards from Superintendent Barnes and Board of Education members Linda Beebe, Emma Petrie Barcelona and Betsy Shaughnessy.

29 students were also awarded scholarships awarded by the Rangers Education Foundation and the Lakewood Leadership Team. The District also recognized our National Merit Commended Scholars Nicholas Cleary, Timothy Daso, and Andrew Sheldon.

Keynote speaker Jennifer Griveas, a 1994 LHS graduate and Chief Human Resources Officer and General Counsel for Eliza Jennings Senior Care Network, spoke to the students about how the "gift" of growing up in Lakewood with all its diversity and freedom of thought has given them an advantage in life and that they must use that gift wisely to serve others and remain true to themselves. "You have this gift of community that you are going to carry with you through your bright future," she said.

A perennial highlight of Celebration of Excellence each year is hearing the high school accomplishments of the seniors honored and learning of their post-graduation plans.

The many interests of our district’s most academically talented seniors include fields such as engineering,  education, international studies, astrophysics, marine science, criminology, and many others. Our honored students will study at a wide variety of colleges, many with significant scholarships, including fully paid tuitions. Our seniors will be heading to Ohio schools such as The Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, Denison University, Kent State University, Cleveland State,  Case Western Reserve University, Ohio Wesleyan, Oberlin College, Baldwin Wallace University, Ohio University and schools across the nation such as University of Southern California, Colgate University, Penn State, Hawaii Pacific, University of Miami, Indiana University, Lehigh University, Eckerd College, and Rhodes College.

The evening also included entertainment by the Lakewood High Chamber Choir. It was a wonderful evening to celebrate the legacy of excellence that is representative of the Lakewood City Schools and its students. Congratulations to all!
