West Shore to Add Sports & Exercise Science Program

The West Shore Career-Tech District is adding a Sports & Exercise Science program beginning with the 2019-2020 school year. It will be the 13th program that West Shore offers.

“We are always looking to add new programs,” said West Shore Executive Director Bill DiMascio. “We are excited about this new offering and hope to have significant college credit tied to the program.”

DiMascio said adding a sports and exercise science program made sense as students will be able to take advantage of the state-of-the-art fitness/workout facilities complete with diagnostic and therapeutic equipment housed at Lakewood High School through partnerships with The Lakewood Recreation Department as well as other community partnerships.

The new program is not just for the student-athletes to consider.  Those interested in sports, exercise, conditioning, nutrition and fitness may find a good fit in Sports & Exercise Science. This career pathway can lead you to careers in personal fitness, athletic training, therapeutic careers and more (see list below). Students who care for others and have an interest in human anatomy, science and math can excel in this career field.

The two-year course of study will be broken down into four courses with possible opportunities for early placement in paid and unpaid internships. Students may become credentialed as a physical therapy aide, in first aid, and in CPR.

This rate of employment in fields related to this program is much is faster than the national average for all occupations with the demand attributed to several factors: An aging population and growing concern over one’s health.
