Excellence is the goal everyone in the Lakewood City Schools strives to achieve each and every day. The 27th Annual Celebration of Excellence, held May 24 at the Civic Auditorium, is the district’s way of honoring those high school and middle school students that managed to achieve that goal this school year with straight A’s in all their courses.

It was an impressive array of 200 high achievers gathered to receive their academic excellence medals from Board of Education president Betsy Shaughnessy and member Linda Beebe along with keynote speaker James Wooley (Class of 1975). Winners of nearly 50 scholarships awarded by the Lakewood Alumni Foundation and the Lakewood Leadership Team were also present. Special recognition was given to Lakewood High’s National Merit Finalist, Grant Colvin, and Commended Scholars, Ino Gjermeni and Zachary Urbach.

Before receiving their medals, the students and families in attendance listened to LHS alum Wooley, who is a partner in the Jones Day law firm, urge students to not rest on their academic laurels. He implored them to live a life that is also filled with loyalty, courage and integrity. “And if you do that, I guarantee you will be successful,” he said.

The LHS seniors have already proven successful thus far as evidenced by their choices for the next stage of their lives. The choices for colleges and majors reflect the diversity of experiences that one may enjoy at Lakewood High. The many interests of our district’s most academically talented students include fields such as engineering, biochemistry, finance, information technology, musical theater, international relations, interactive media and public relations. They will study at such prestigious colleges as Stanford University, University of Notre Dame, Northwestern University, Carnegie Mellon University, as well schools closer to home such as Case Western Reserve University, Ohio State, Ohio University, Miami University and Kenyon College.

Congratulations to all the academic award winners as well as the scholarship winners! For a list of students honored, please click here. Scholarship winners can be found here. Also, check out photos from the event here.
