Official results are in and the Harding Power of the Pen combined 7th & 8th grade team placed 8th overall out of 280 in the state competition held May 21 at the College of Wooster. Garfield writer Sara Shyte will have her story "Behind Closed Doors" published as a winner of one of the 24 "Best of the Best" stories from the competition.
Besides Harding's team accomplishment, the group also had some individual honors as 7th grader Renee Klann placed 7th overall and 8th grader Nora Varcho placed 14th.
Shyte will receive a $50 savings bond for her "Best of the Best" award, one of the tournament's highest honors. Her story will be published in the tournament's 2010 Book of Winners.
The state tournament, which drew 700 writers from 280 schools across Ohio, is a culmination of 28 district and 13 regional competitions held throughout the state for more than 7,000 7th and 8th grade writers.
At the state tournament, writers compete in three, 35-minute rounds. The top 54 students in each grade move on to a "power round." Klann, Varcho as well as Sarah Neff made it to the power round for Harding.
Also participating in the state tournament were Harding students Georgia Cole, Sarah Smith and Kathryn Urban. Garfield Middle School was represented at the state tournament by Jon Poilpre and Sara Shyte.
Congratulations to all the Power of the Pen team members from both schools for their terrific performances throughout the competitions.
