At its May 4 meeting, the Board of Education approved Keith Ahearn to be Harding Middle School’s next principal beginning in the 2009-2010 school year. Ahearn, currently principal at Garfield Heights Middle School, will succeed Meredith Wojtkun, who decided to return to teaching in the district.

In accepting his new position, Ahearn commented about how he loves the “energy and enthusiasm” of middle school students. He has spent eight years at the middle-school level and his current school consists of 950 students and 95 staff members so he is well-poised to lead a school the size of Harding at 700 students.
Ahearn comes to Lakewood with a solid background in curriculum and instruction. He was a social studies teacher before moving into an assistant principal position at Garfield Hts. Middle School. He has an M.A. in Education from John Carroll University and has attended the First Ring Leadership Academy and the Harvard University Institute for School Leadership.

In Garfield Heights, Ahearn has significantly improved the middle school’s safety and student behavior by implementing consistent and well-enforced building routines and discipline procedures. He has accomplished this by building relationships with students, providing mediation and other conflict resolution services and by being a visible and respected presence in the building.
Ahearn was also offered the middle school principal job in Chagrin Falls but chose Lakewood because he said he respects its “strong commitment to school improvement as well as its commitment to the whole student” as evidenced by the district’s strong support of art, music, sports and so many other enrichment activities offered by the district.
