Harding and Garfield middle schools’ Power of the Pen teams have qualified four writers each for the creative writing contest’s State tournament.
After having worked their way through District and Regional tournaments the following students will compete in May at the College of Wooster: Garfield teammates Grace Bader (7th), Tony Kahn (8th), Grace Lazos (8th), and Lilly Pollack (8th); Harding teammates (all 8th graders): Monica Adams, Ellen Latsko, Sheila McMahon and Trent Wimbiscus. Harding 7th grader Maddie Burns is the team's alternate, who will go if one of the original eight cannot attend.
The team of eight from Lakewood represents 33% of the two schools’ original Power of the Pen writers. On average, most teams only qualify about 10% of their writers.
The rest of the teammates can also be proud of their accomplishments at the Regional tournament, held Feb. 28 at Garfield. Out of 265 writers from 46 middle schools, Lakewood writers represented themselves well.
The combined Harding team of 7th and 8th graders took second place for the Sweepstakes Trophy, which also includes points carried over from the District tournament. The Harding 7th graders placed fourth in their division, and Garfield 8th grader Tony Kahn earned a prestigious “Best of the Best” honor for one of his earlier works in the District tournament.
Four of Lakewood’s writers placed in the top 15 at the tournament: Bader (2nd), Lazos (8th), Adams (9th) and McMahon (13th). Wimbiscus and Latsko also earned “Best of Rounds” at the Regional tourney.
