Our academic superstars were in the spotlight at the 33rd Annual Celebration of Excellence, held May 11 at the Civic Auditorium, as the District honored 251 students in grades 6-12 for having achieved a 4.0 or more GPA through three quarters this school year.

Thirty-two students were awarded scholarships awarded by the Rangers Education Foundation and the Lakewood Leadership Team. Special recognition was given to Lakewood High’s National Merit Finalists Amanda Cabot and Jonathan Pizzo and National Merit Commended Scholars Rose Beisel-Lin and Fox Milenski.

Keynote speaker Sam O'Leary, a 2007LHS grad and current president of Lakewood City Council, spoke to the students and their families about the qualities it takes to achieve level of excellence honored at the ceremony and how those qualities will carry them well through life. "We are here celebrating the grit, perserverance and determination that brought you here tonight," he said. "You continue to strive for the higher grade, meet the higher standard....that is what truly makes you excellent."

Hearing of the accomplishments in their high school years and the post-secondary plans of our graduating seniors honored was another highlight of the evening

The many interests of our district’s most academically talented seniors include fields such as engineering, chemistry, exercise therapy, education, design, nuclear physics, nursing and neuroscience, among many others. Our honored students will study at a wide variety of colleges, many with scholarships. Our students will be at Ohio schools such as The Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, Kent State University, Cleveland Institute of Art, Case Western Reserve University, Oberlin College and schools across the nation such as Brown University, Duke University, American University, University of Iowa, Arizona State, Syracuse University, Rensselaer PolyTechnic Institute and University of Vermont.

The evening also included entertainment by the Lakewood High Chamber Choir. It was a wonderful evening to celebrate the legacy of excellence that is representative of the Lakewood City Schools and its students. Congratulations to all!
