Advanced science sixth-graders at Harding experienced a taste of what scientists at NASA Glenn go through when testing out a concept. With help from a NASA education outreach specialist, the class engaged in the engineering design process. Teams of four consisting of a design engineer, technical engineer, operations engineer and technical writer designed and tested a descent helicopter, learning about resistance, gravity, motion and force, and finding how to slow the descent of a falling object. The class served as a beta test for a similar, more complex project scientists at NASA Glenn are currently working on. The visit is part of NASA’s outreach to increase the number of students wishing to enter STEM fields.
