LHS First Day for New Students Only

fresh startLakewood High School is excited to introduce a new Fresh Start orientation for the 2019-2020 school year! The first day of school on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 will be dedicated to freshmen and other new students to Lakewood High. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors will report for their first day on Wednesday, August 21, 2019.

Garfield's Black 8th in State Power of Pen Contest

Layla and coachesCongratulations to Garfield 8th grader Layla Black, who placed 8th in the State Tournament of the Power of the Pen creative writing competition! Layla was one of 750 contestants that advanced to the competition held at the College of Wooster My 23-24. In the competition, writers are given prompts to jump-start a story. The writers have 40 minutes to finish their essay or short story. Power of the Pen advisers Maggie Bacher and Leslie Eiben said they couldn't be more proud!

Middle School Mock Trial Teams Take Top Honors

Garfield teamGarfield and Harding middle schools each took two teams to Columbus to compete in the statewide Middle School Mock Trial Showcase sponsored by the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education, where 47 middle school teams went to trial against each other over a three-day period in early May at the Ohio Supreme Court Building. Each of the schools' team members earned numerous "Best" awards in the process.

Garfield's Lynch Earns Outstanding Math Teacher Award

LynchCongratulations to Garfield Middle School teacher Barb Lynch, who was selected as an Outstanding Mathematics Educator by the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics! Lynch will be honored at the organization's May 16 awards banquet. "She is a true model for excellent classroom instruction, engagement and student growth. We are very proud of Barb and honored to have her as a member of the Garfield Staff," said Principal Robin Beavers.

Students to be on Fox 8 Reciting Pledge May 15

Fox 8 will feature students from all our District middle schools and elementary schools during its Pledge of Allegiance recitation at 6:40 am. Garfield will be featured May 15.

Artists Earn 1st, 2nd in State Reflections Contest

logoThe Lakewood Council of PTAs Reflection Committee recently announced that five of its submissions for judging at the state level earned recognition for further artistic merit. In the high school visual arts category, senior Riley Geyer won first place, which qualifies her piece to move on to national judging. Garfield Middle School seventh grader Nora Germaine earned a second place in the state in the middle school visual arts category.

LHS, Garfield Students Awarded Science Fair Honors

Our students won many honors, including special industry awards that included cash prizes. Click Read More for a list of winners.

Music Boosters Sing & Serve is April 12

Boosters logoThe Music Boosters will host its third annual Sing & Serve event on Friday, April 12, 2019 from 6-10 pm in the Lakewood High cafeteria. Join our music teachers for a night of fun, food, and karaoke! There will be Angelo's Pizza meals for $5 and the chance to sing a song with your music teacher! For more details, click here.

Garfield Hosting Blood Drive March 4

Garfield 8th Grader Wins District Wrestling Title

Muimayn SaltiCongratulations to Garfield 8th grader Muimayn Salti for capturing the 176-pound title at the Ohio Athletic Committee District tournament wrestling meet held February 17 in Oregon, Ohio. Muimayn will compete as one of 48 state qualifiers from all over Ohio for a chance to win the Junior High State Championship March 16-17 in Youngstown. Good luck to Muimayn as he vies for the Junior High state title!

Garfield Choirs Tie for First in Stop the Hate Contest

stop the hate logoIn partnership with the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage and Roots of American Music (ROAM), the Rock Hall hosted performances by middle school students from across Northeast Ohio who have been working with teaching artists to compose original songs for the Stop the Hate: Youth Sing Out competition held on December 12, 2018. The Garfield Middle School 6th and 7th grade choirs tied for first place and earned their school $5,000!

Garfield Power of the Pen Team Has Two Top Finishers

Powerof Pen logoThe Garfield Middle School Power of the Pen team attended the District Tournament on December 8 at Monticello Middle School in University Heights and landed two of its writers in the top 15. Congratulations to 8th graders Layla Black, who placed 3rd overall, and Ellie Clark, who placed 12th. The team is coached by teachers Maggie Bacher and Leslie Eiben.

 

Garfield Awarded Grant to Purchase Books

booksGarfield Middle School has been awarded a grant of $1,382 from the State Library of Ohio as part of the Library Services and Technology Act. The grant is to help support costs associated with the Celebrating Ohio Book Awards & Authors initiative. Garfield media specialist April Hoy said the 146 books to be purchased will be used to supply the books clubs that are part of Reading & Writing Workshop at both Garfield and Harding.
 

Garfield Ceremony Honors Veterans for Their Service

flagVeterans from across generations gathered on Monday at Garfield Middle School as part of the 22nd Annual Veterans Day Recognition Program hosted by Garfield staff, students, PTSA and Help To Others (H2O). Veterans from wars stretching from World War II and current active duty service members shared breakfast with other non-combat veterans, spouses and community members. Mayor Michael Summers also stopped by to thank the veterans for their service.

Once submitted PTC Fast will send an email with the subject header "Select Date/Time for Teacher Conference Now".  Click the link included in this email to select open time slots for your conferences.  PTC Fast will send a confirmation email with your conference times. 

Reminder:  School is in session the first day of conferences, Wednesday 11/7/18. There is no school for students on Thursday, 11/8/18 and Friday, 11/9/18

CPH's Classroom Matinees Visits Garfield

Sydney actingThe Cleveland Play House Classroom Matinees program paid a visit to students at Garfield Middle School on Oct. 5 to teach the students about empathy and inclusion – qualities that help minimize bullying among peers.

The Classroom Matinees program aims to bring theater into the schools as traveling to see a stage production is often cost prohibitive for many schools. The Matinees program teaches about response to bullying, conflict resolution and racial tolerance in fun and engaging ways using performance techniques.

Summer Reading Authors Visit with MS Students

Garfield & Harding Middle School students had a special treat this week as all three summer reading book authors talked with students either live or by Skype, answering questions and sharing an inside look at their craft.

Shaker Administrator Named New Garfield Asst. Principal

Oiumet Smith photoThe Lakewood Board of Education approved Ouimet Smith, Shaker Heights Schools’ Director of Student Affairs, as the new Assistant Principal at Garfield Middle School. He replaces Tony Chiaravalle, who is moving to Lakewood High as a House Principal.

Back to School Dates Welcome back

I hope all our students and families have enjoyed a relaxing summer.  I am glad to rejoin the Garfield staff and look forward to the year ahead. As we begin the first full week of August, the school office is now open in full preparation for the 2018-2019 school year.  With that, we have several important dates coming this month I want to make sure you have on your calendars.
